Case studies, social media and newsletters for Hammersmith United Charities
Storytelling is one of the best bits about being a charity copywriter. I get to show the real people behind the statistics, whether that’s a therapist who works with traumatised children, or a homeless person who’s getting the support he needs to move forward.
"Kate writes case studies about our grant holders and almshouse residents along with articles about topical issues, newsletters and social media posts. She is always responsive, turns around work very quickly and has really helped improve the quality of our communications." Victoria Hill, Chief Executive & Clerk to the Trustees, Hammersmith United Charities
The client
While much has changed in the 400 years since Hammersmith United Charities was founded, the charity’s support is still vital today. It operates in one of the most unequal boroughs in London, where one in four children lives in poverty. HUC supports the community in two ways:
-
Grant funding for local organisations
-
Sheltered housing for 92 residents across two almshouses
The project
Hammersmith United Charities wants to both demonstrate its own impact and to raise awareness of the impact made by its grant holders, so it brought me onboard back in 2024. Since then, I’ve interviewed food banks, domestic abuse charities, homeless shelters, arts charities and numerous other organisations that play a crucial role in supporting vulnerable adults and children in London. (And I’ve done it all from my little office in Devon.)
As well as grant holders, I’ve interviewed several residents about what it’s like living in a modern-day London almshouse, and I’ve written and designed the charity’s newsletters. The newsletters now have an open rate of around 50%. (The average for the charity sector is 33%.)
Hammersmith United Charities has a small team. By dealing directly with grant holders and residents, and handling sign-off and content design myself, I reduce the team’s workload, leaving them free to focus on the important stuff, like allocating funding.
